Message of the President,

There we are! The European Society of Pathology with a totally new web-face. The changes in style of the site: more colour, more news, more interaction, reflect the choices that have been made over the last few years in terms of the ESP profile, its aims and activities. With Virchows Archiv as our society's official journal, we will remain firmly anchored in a tradition of more than 150 years leadership in pathology in Europe, notably in organising since 1964 the increasingly appreciated European Congresses of Pathology. But our intention is to be more visible as a leading force in the future of our specialty in Europe and beyond in
  • organising an annual congress (which will be the case as of 2011),
  • increasing the offer of quality postgraduate and continuous medical education,
  • more closely interacting with national societies and thus contribute to harmonization of training in and practice of pathology in Europe,
  • providing a professional supporting platform for the working groups, which constitute on a daily basis the beating heart of the ESP.

How will we get there? A first step is this new website. Sure, as much of the evolving ESP the site is still uBosmannder construction and in the months to come a variety of new elements will pop up. Do not hesitate to react. Tell us what you like and what you don't and your views will certainly be taken into consideration. A crucial step is the creation of an office in Brussels. The ESP has found an attractive site in Brussels where professionals will support administration and organisation of our activities. Small meetings can also be planned in the office.

We as officers and executive committee need to interact more with our members. An important step in that direction will be the recreation of the newsletter, which will keep you electronically informed as to what is up and running. A new Education Committee will start planning exciting new ESP courses but will also serve as an electronic bulletin board, informing you all of the wide variety of quality courses organized by national bodies but never or rarely attracting trainees from abroad.

Ambitious? Certainly, but I am sure you would not appreciate a Society without ambition. Realistic? No doubt, because a serious professional society will have to cater to the needs of its members. Can we do it alone? Certainly not. Only with your active input will we be able to develop pathology in the 21st century. Let's get there together.
